Entrudo Chocalheiro Podence in Podence
Entrudo Chocalheiro brings the Caretos de Podence into the streets between Fat Sunday and Shrove Tuesday, when masked figures in fringed woollen suits and cowbells run through this small Trás-os-Montes village chasing onlookers. Recognised by UNESCO in 2019, the ritual is described as tracing back to pre-Roman, Celtic-era practices.
Podence is a small village within the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros, in the far northeast of Portugal, and for most of the year it draws little outside attention.
