The story

Entrudo Chocalheiro Podence in Podence

Entrudo Chocalheiro brings the Caretos de Podence into the streets between Fat Sunday and Shrove Tuesday, when masked figures in fringed woollen suits and cowbells run through this small Trás-os-Montes village chasing onlookers. Recognised by UNESCO in 2019, the ritual is described as tracing back to pre-Roman, Celtic-era practices.

Podence is a small village within the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros, in the far northeast of Portugal, and for most of the year it draws little outside attention.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Caretos de Podence stand apart within Portugal's carnival traditions through their specific costume and sound: a fringed, brightly coloured woollen suit, a mask made of tinplate or leather rather than fabric or paint, and a belt hung with heavy cowbells whose clanging announces the wearer's approach before he is seen

02

The mystery stays covered

That combination of mask, wool and chocalhos, the cowbells giving the festival its name, is unique to Podence among related mascarada traditions elsewhere in Trás-os-Montes and northern Spain

03

The city starts moving

Scholars describe the ritual as carrying practices reaching back over two thousand years to pre-Roman, Celtic-era winter and spring rites, one of the clearest surviving examples of an ancient seasonal masking tradition still performed by the community it originated with
