Feiras Novas is Ponte de Lima's major September fair and patronal festival, created by royal decree in 1826 and rooted in the town's much older cattle and produce markets on the Lima river. Days of religious processions for Nossa Senhora das Dores, philharmonic band concerts, concertina competitions, and folk parades draw large crowds to one of the Minho's oldest fairs.

Ponte de Lima already had a long history as a trading center on the banks of the Lima river when, in 1826, a royal decree reorganized its fair and gave it the name it still carries: Feiras Novas, literally the new fairs, distinguishing the reorganized event from the older markets it replaced.
