Fantasporto in Porto

Fantasporto is Porto's international genre-film festival, held each February or March since 1981 and now centered at the Batalha Centro de Cinema. Specializing in fantasy, horror, science fiction, and experimental cinema, it screens around one hundred films from roughly thirty countries, including dozens of premieres, and hands out trophy-only prizes across competitive sections judged by international juries.

Fantasporto traces its origin to an ordinary conversation in a Porto coffee shop in 1980, when film critics Mario Dorminsky and Beatriz Pacheco Pereira sat down with painter Jose Manuel Pereira and decided the city needed a festival dedicated to fantasy, horror, and science-fiction cinema, genres that mainstream festivals of the era largely ignored.
