The story

Porto Book Fair in Porto

The Porto Book Fair (Feira do Livro do Porto) gathers roughly 130 publishers and booksellers each summer in the Jardins do Palacio de Cristal, the terraced gardens overlooking the Douro. Founded in 1930 and run by Porto's city council since 2014, the fair combines open-air book stands with evening concerts, staged readings, poetry recitals and comedy nights across a roughly two-to-three week run in August and September.

Late each summer, when the afternoon light in Porto turns long and gold over the Douro valley, the paths of the Jardins do Palacio de Cristal fill with book stands set beneath the trees.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The fair's setting is its defining feature: the Jardins do Palacio de Cristal are a landscaped garden complex built around the historic Crystal Palace grounds, with sweeping views over the Douro river valley, and the fair spreads its book stands along shaded garden paths rather than inside any single hall

02

The mystery stays covered

Each edition names a personality from the world of books to honor, giving the program a changing focal point year to year, and the evening schedule pushes well beyond book commerce into debate panels, staged readings, spoken word, poetry recitals and stand-up comedy

03

The city starts moving

Sharing an 1930 founding year with its Lisbon counterpart, the fair is one of Portugal's two anchor literary institutions, though it keeps a distinctly Porto identity through its garden setting and municipal organization since 2014

Getting around

Plan the trip into Porto around the exact event area, then leave extra time for the return.

What to wear

Casual, layered clothing works best. Porto evenings in late summer can cool quickly once the sun drops below the garden's tree line, so a light jacket is worth carrying even on a warm...

Safety

Porto Book Fair is easier when valuables are secure and the group knows where to meet if separated.
