The story

Porto Design Biennale in Porto

Porto Design Biennale turns the city into a temporary showcase for product, graphic and spatial design, with exhibitions and installations spread across museums, galleries and repurposed industrial buildings. It gathers Portuguese and international studios in one program, so a single pass through the host venues can cover a wide range of contemporary design work without needing a car or a packed itinerary.

Porto does not have a dedicated design museum on the scale of London or Milan, so every edition of the Porto Design Biennale has to invent its exhibition spaces from scratch, borrowing palaces, disused warehouses and municipal buildings across the historic center.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The biennial format means each edition builds a fresh curatorial theme rather than repeating a fixed formula, and Porto's mix of neoclassical, art nouveau and modernist buildings gives the installations unusual settings to work with

02

The mystery stays covered

Exhibitions typically pair established Portuguese design houses with younger studios and international guests, so visitors see both finished commercial products and speculative or experimental pieces in the same afternoon

03

The city starts moving

Talks and workshops fill the gaps between shows, letting the event work as much for casual browsers as for design professionals

04

The water draws everyone in

Porto's compact city center means several venues can be reached on foot, which keeps the day loose rather than tightly scheduled
