The story

Torres Vedras Carnival in Torres Vedras

Torres Vedras Carnival is a street carnival held in the pre-Lenten period in Torres Vedras, north of Lisbon, recognized as Portuguese National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2022. Nicknamed the most Portuguese carnival for resisting Brazilian-style samba influence, it centers on satirical parades, a King and Queen of Carnival tradition dating to 1923, and the closing burning of an effigy called the Entrudo.

Torres Vedras has a documented Entrudo tradition stretching back to at least 1574, when local records complain about young men running through the streets on Entrudo day.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes Torres Vedras from Portugal's many carnivals is its deliberate rejection of imported samba spectacle in favor of home-grown satire and characters unique to the town

02

The mystery stays covered

The matrafonas, men dressed as women in exaggerated gowns, colorful wigs, and heavy makeup, have paraded since around 1926 and remain the carnival's signature figures

03

The city starts moving

Compadres and comadres, paired community figures, publicly read satirical mock-wills that skewer local and national events of the past year

04

The water draws everyone in

The Monday-night corso trapalhao gives unaffiliated revelers a rule-free parade of improvised costumes, while the closing Ash Wednesday ritual stages a mock trial and burning of the Entrudo, a straw effigy, formally closing the festivities
