Festival de las Mascaras de Hatillo in Hatillo

Every December 28, Hatillo marks the Día de los Santos Inocentes with the Festival de las Máscaras, a masked celebration brought by Canary Island immigrants in 1823. Costumed figures representing King Herod's soldiers from the biblical Massacre of the Innocents ride through town on floats and chariots in an event played for humor rather than solemnity.

When Agustín Ruiz Miranda, a Canarian immigrant, founded the town of Hatillo on Puerto Rico's north coast in 1823, he brought more than a plan for streets and public buildings.
