Carnaval Ponceno in Ponce

The Ponce Carnival, dating to 1858, is the oldest carnival in Puerto Rico and one of the oldest in the Western Hemisphere. Held each February, it features parades of masked characters representing good and evil, most famously the horned, papier-mache vejigante masks unique to Ponce's carnival tradition.

On Puerto Rico's southern coast, Ponce holds a claim that few cities in the Western Hemisphere can match: its carnival, first recorded in 1858, is the oldest in Puerto Rico and among the oldest carnival traditions anywhere in the Americas.
