The story

Throwback Food Festival in Old Doha Port

The Throwback Food Festival, now in its third edition, runs through Ramadan at Old Doha Port, reviving dishes and dining concepts from Qatari cafes of the 1970s through 1990s. Around 30 vendors serve nostalgic food alongside classic TV screenings, live cooking demonstrations, and traditional handicraft corners.

Before Doha's skyline filled with towers, its café culture ran on a much smaller, more intimate scale: neighborhood spots serving simple grilled meats, karak tea, and home-style dishes to regulars who knew the owners by name.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's organizing concept, deliberately recreating specific decades of Qatari café culture rather than offering a generic food market, gives it a clear identity: live cooking stations recreate classic recipes from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s in front of visitors, while screenings of retro television programs run alongside the food stalls to build a full nostalgic atmosphere rather than food alone

02

The mystery stays covered

Around thirty vendors and restaurants take part, with regional participation beyond Qatar in recent editions, and the late-night hours, running past midnight on weekends, align with Ramadan's suhoor rhythm rather than a conventional daytime festival schedule
