The story

Kinoshock Open CIS and Baltic Film Festival in Anapa

Kinoshock is an open film festival for cinema from the former Soviet republics and the Baltic states, held each September in the Black Sea resort town of Anapa since 1992. Founded by actress Irina Shevchuk, screenwriter Viktor Merezhko and critic Sergei Novozhilov, it has grown into one of the most respected post-Soviet film forums, combining competitive screenings with open-air shows, actor meetings and events across Krasnodar region.

Every September, while most of Anapa's summer crowds are packing up their beach towels, a different kind of visitor starts arriving: directors, actors and critics from Moscow, Almaty, Riga, Tbilisi and beyond, all converging on this modest Black Sea resort for one of the more improbable film festivals in the world.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What makes Kinoshock distinctive is its founding mission: at a moment when the Soviet film industry was fracturing along new national borders, its founders insisted that Russian, Ukrainian, Georgian, Baltic, Central Asian and other post-Soviet cinemas still belonged in conversation with one another

02

The mystery stays covered

That premise has held for more than three decades, making the festival a rare annual meeting point for filmmakers whose countries otherwise have little institutional contact

03

The city starts moving

Screenings spill out of cinema halls onto Anapa's seafront esplanade, so vacationing beachgoers end up rubbing shoulders with directors and actors between competition rounds, giving the event an informal, seaside energy that few festivals built around cinema from the region can match
