Bazhov Festival in Chelyabinsk region

The Bazhov Festival is an annual folk-art gathering in Chelyabinsk region named for Ural writer Pavel Bazhov, whose Malachite Box tales of the Mistress of the Copper Mountain and master stonecutters shaped regional folklore. Held over a summer weekend since the 1980s, it draws folk choirs, craftspeople and campers to a rural site for competitions, concerts and stone-carving demonstrations.

Pavel Bazhov spent much of his career collecting the oral tales of Ural miners and stonecutters, publishing them from the 1930s onward as literary skaz, a storytelling style that keeps the rhythm and voice of oral folklore even in print.
