Bazhov Festival of Folk Art in Demyarino

The All-Russian Bazhov Festival of Folk Art, named for Ural writer Pavel Bazhov, has run since 1993 and gained its all-Russian status in 1999, now held over the last weekend of June near the village of Demyarino in Chelyabinsk Region after decades at earlier sites including Nepryakhino, Kyshtym, Lake Sungul and Solnechnaya Dolina near Miass. It celebrates folk art and craft rooted in Ural heritage, the same regional culture that inspired Bazhov's collected tales.

Pavel Bazhov spent decades collecting and reshaping the oral folk tales of the Ural Mountains into the literary tales that made him one of Russia's most distinctive regional writers, stories built around stonecutters, miners and the semi-magical Mistress of the Copper Mountain who guards the region's mineral wealth.
