Kalmykia Zul Festival in Elista

Zul, also called the Festival of Lamps, is a Buddhist holiday of the Gelug school marking the death anniversary of Tibetan reformer Tsongkhapa, observed by Kalmyks, Buryats and Tuvans on the 25th day of the tenth lunar month. In Kalmykia it doubles as the traditional day everyone adds one year to their age, and it has been a recognized official national holiday of the Republic of Kalmykia since a 2004 law.

Zul, known in Kalmyk as Zul-khural or Zula-khural, is observed by followers of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism on the 25th day of the tenth month of the Buddhist lunar calendar, commemorating the death, or passing into nirvana, of Je Tsongkhapa, the fourteenth-century reformer and philosopher who founded the Gelug school and is revered in Tibetan Buddhism as a second Buddha.
