First Factory of Avant-Garde Festival in Ivanovo

Since 2017, Ivanovo's train station, a landmark of 1930s Soviet Constructivist architecture, has served as the anchor for First Factory of Avant-Garde, an interdisciplinary arts festival spanning theater, dance, visual art, photography, design, music, and film. Held each May, the festival draws on the city's 1920s-1930s avant-garde legacy to frame a program of contemporary experimental work, pulling in more than ten thousand visitors in recent editions.

Ivanovo does not often appear on lists of Russia's great art cities, but for a brief period in the 1920s and 1930s, it genuinely was one, a laboratory for Constructivist architecture and experimental Soviet design that left behind buildings still standing today, most strikingly the city's 1933 train station, one of the largest works of Constructivist architecture in the country.
