The story

Kazan International Muslim Film Festival in Kazan

The Kazan International Muslim Film Festival, also known as the Golden Minbar or Altyn Minbar, has screened films exploring Islamic culture and Muslim life since 2005, making it one of the longest-running film festivals in Tatarstan. Held annually in early September in Kazan, it draws entries from across the Muslim world and beyond, including Iran, Malaysia and Azerbaijan.

The Kazan International Muslim Film Festival began as the Golden Minbar International Festival of Muslim Cinema, founded in 2004 in Moscow as an international forum for filmmakers exploring Muslim life, culture and faith.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's origins trace to 2004, when it was founded in Moscow as an international forum for Muslim filmmakers, with its inaugural edition held in Kazan in September 2005

02

The mystery stays covered

After a rift between the Moscow-based founders and the Kazan-based organizing team, the Kazan side took over the festival from 2010 onward and rebranded it as the Kazan International Festival of Muslim Cinema, giving Tatarstan's capital sole ownership of an event that now regularly premieres films from Muslim-majority countries and screens work exploring Islamic themes from filmmakers of other backgrounds as well
