The story

Buben Druzhby Indigenous Cultures Festival in Khabarovsk

Each summer, the Nanai village of Achan in Khabarovsk Krai hosts a traveling relay of folklore and ritual festivals belonging to the Indigenous peoples of the Amur River basin. Drum rhythms, dance troupes from across the krai, and craftspeople selling birch-bark tools, amulets, and fish-skin garments fill the village for two days, offering a rare concentrated view of Nanai, Ulchi, and Evenki traditions in one place.

Achan is not a place most travelers stumble upon by accident.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Buben Druzhby, meaning Drum of Friendship, gets its name from the shaman drums that anchor its opening ceremonies, and the festival's format sets it apart from a typical folk fair: it rotates between villages as a relay, so different Indigenous communities of the Amur take turns hosting the gathering rather than always meeting in a regional capital

02

The mystery stays covered

More than a hundred performers and craftspeople usually take part, drawn from Nanai, Ulchi, Evenki, and other northern communities across several districts of Khabarovsk Krai

03

The city starts moving

The dances performed are explicitly tied to nature, water, and hunting, and the crafts on display, from amulets to clothing made of fish and animal skins, are working traditions still practiced locally rather than museum reconstructions
