The story

Benderiada in Kozmodemyansk

Benderiada is an annual satire and humor festival held in Kozmodemyansk, a Volga river town in the Republic of Mari El, every year since 1995. It celebrates Ostap Bender, the trickster hero of Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov's novels The Twelve Chairs and The Golden Calf, since local tradition holds Kozmodemyansk was the model for the fictional town of Vasyuki.

In 1928, Soviet writers Ilya Ilf and Yevgeny Petrov published The Twelve Chairs, a satirical novel that became one of the most widely quoted works in Russian popular culture.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's premise is unusually literal for a Russian regional event: the town leans fully into being the real New Vasyuki, restaging Bender's swindle from The Twelve Chairs, in which he convinces a provincial chess club that hosting a grandmaster tournament will turn their town into a world capital of chess tourism

02

The mystery stays covered

A local actor plays Bender each year, in the character's signature striped cap, leading a costumed procession along the Volga embankment

03

The city starts moving

The event mixes literary parody with genuine satire and stand-up performance, drawing humorists and amateur theater troupes from across the Volga region rather than just Mari El
