Karavon Russian Folklore Festival in Laishevo

The tiny village of Russkoye Nikolskoye, in Tatarstan's Laishevsky District, swells with visitors every May for Karavon, an annual Russian folklore festival rooted in customs recorded as far back as the sixteenth century. Held since 1993 and made an official republic holiday in 2003, it draws well over a hundred folk ensembles and tens of thousands of visitors for round dances performed in a distinctive slow, circling step.

Russkoye Nikolskoye is a village of only a few hundred people, roughly thirty-five kilometers from Kazan, and for most of the year it is exactly as quiet as that population suggests.
