Caspiy Shores of Friendship International Folk Festival in Makhachkala
Each spring, Makhachkala and the nearby city of Kaspiysk host Caspiy, Shores of Friendship, a folk festival gathering ensembles and craftspeople from Dagestan, Kalmykia, Astrakhan Oblast, and Caspian neighbors including Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. Days of folk song, dance, and craft displays culminate in a gala concert on Makhachkala's central boulevard, framed explicitly as an exercise in cultural diplomacy between Caspian peoples.
The Caspian Sea has connected, and occasionally divided, the peoples along its shores for centuries, a body of water bordered by Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan, each with its own distinct folk traditions and a long history of trade running across it.
