The story

Highlanders International Festival of Folklore and Traditional Culture in Makhachkala

Since the early 2000s, Makhachkala's central square has opened each summer to a procession of ensembles that few outside the Caucasus ever see together: Dagestani, Azerbaijani, Mongolian, Belarusian, and South Ossetian performers sharing one stage under the banner of the Highlanders international folklore festival. Now past its twentieth edition, it remains one of the region's largest gatherings devoted to mountain and steppe folk traditions.

Highlanders International Festival matters because it turns local identity into public practice, giving history, skill and belonging a form people can gather around.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few festivals in the North Caucasus draw performers from as wide a geographic spread — organizers have brought in ensembles from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Mongolia, and South Ossetia alongside more than fifty folk collectives representing Dagestan's own extraordinary ethnic diversity, a republic with dozens of distinct peoples and languages packed into a single territory

02

The mystery stays covered

The week-long program layers a mask festival, folk dance competitions, circus arts, craft exhibitions, and open processions on top of gala concerts, giving Highlanders a scale and variety that smaller regional folklore events cannot match

03

The city starts moving

Its longevity — running for over two decades with state cultural institutions' support — has made it a fixture of the Dagestani summer calendar rather than a one-off showcase
