Highlanders International Festival of Folklore and Traditional Culture in Makhachkala

Since the early 2000s, Makhachkala's central square has opened each summer to a procession of ensembles that few outside the Caucasus ever see together: Dagestani, Azerbaijani, Mongolian, Belarusian, and South Ossetian performers sharing one stage under the banner of the Highlanders international folklore festival. Now past its twentieth edition, it remains one of the region's largest gatherings devoted to mountain and steppe folk traditions.
