Circassian Day Festival in Maykop/Nalchik
Circassian Flag Day is observed every April 25 by Circassian (Adyghe) communities in Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, Krasnodar Krai, and the global diaspora, marking the anniversary of the republic's flag legislation with cultural gatherings and ceremonies centered on the cities of Maykop and Nalchik, among other regional centers.
The Adyghe, or Circassian, flag is one of the most widely recognized symbols of a people whose historical homeland spans the northwestern Caucasus, a region now divided among the Russian republics of Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria, and Karachay-Cherkessia, with additional Circassian communities in Krasnodar Krai and a large diaspora abroad, much of it descended from nineteenth-century deportations following the Russian-Circassian War.
