The story

Pushkin Poetry Festival Mikhailovskoye in Mikhailovskoye

The Pushkin Poetry Festival is Russia's longest-running literary festival, held each June at Mikhailovskoye, the Pushkin family estate and museum-reserve in Pskov Oblast where Alexander Pushkin lived in rural exile from 1824 to 1826 and wrote some of his most significant work, timed around the poet's birthday on June 6.

Alexander Pushkin is treated in Russia with a cultural centrality that has few real analogues elsewhere, routinely described as the founder of modern Russian literary language, and Mikhailovskoye, his mother's family estate in what is now Pskov Oblast, holds a correspondingly central place in his biography.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Mikhailovskoye is not a recreation of a Pushkin site but the actual working estate where the poet spent two years of internal exile under police surveillance, producing major sections of Eugene Onegin and the drama Boris Godunov during that period, and where he is buried, alongside his Hannibal ancestors, in the nearby Svyatogorsky Monastery

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival's institutional continuity owes much to Semyon Geichenko, the museum-reserve's longtime director who rebuilt and championed the estate after wartime destruction and helped establish the festival as an annual literary pilgrimage, giving the event an unusually direct, decades-long link between a single custodian and a national literary commemoration
