The story

Journey to Christmas Moscow in Moscow

Journey to Christmas is Moscow's citywide winter festival, running from mid-December into January across dozens of decorated squares and parks. Manezhnaya Square becomes an old-fashioned holiday village inspired by early twentieth-century Russian Christmas fairs, complete with ice rinks and a snow slope beside the Kremlin walls.

Before the Soviet era suppressed most religious winter celebration, Russian towns held Christmas fairs built around market stalls, mummers, and open-air ice entertainment, a tradition that largely disappeared for most of the twentieth century.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few winter festivals combine sheer geographic spread with a consistent design language the way Journey to Christmas does: the 2025-2026 edition spans 35 separate holiday locations across the city rather than a single central market, letting neighborhoods far from the center get their own version of the festival

02

The mystery stays covered

At its heart, Manezhnaya Square is rebuilt each year as a themed historical village, drawing on genuine early 1900s Russian Christmas fair traditions rather than a generic European-market template

03

The city starts moving

The signature attraction is architectural in scale: a temporary 130-foot snow-covered slope built for snowboarding and sledding directly beside the Kremlin walls, a setting no other winter festival in the world can replicate
