The story

Spasskaya Tower International Military Tattoo in Moscow

Spasskaya Tower is Moscow's international military music festival and tattoo, staged each August on Red Square beneath the Kremlin's namesake tower. Since 2006 it has brought together Russian and foreign military bands, honor guard units and folk ensembles for a multi-day program of massed formation marching, orchestral arrangements and choreographed drill routines performed against the fortress walls.

Every August the cobblestones of Red Square, normally the domain of tourists and the changing of the guard, are cleared for grandstands and a stage set against the red brick of the Kremlin wall and the tower for which the festival is named.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival is routinely ranked among the world's most prominent military tattoos, drawing bands, honor guards and folk performers from more than 40 countries over the years since its 2006 launch

02

The mystery stays covered

Its setting is unmatched: Red Square's cobblestones and the illuminated Kremlin facade become a stage large enough for massed formations of more than a thousand musicians performing in a single finale

The city starts moving

Each show is built like theatre rather than a simple parade, opening with a prologue, moving through individual national contingents' choreographed sketches, and closing with an epilogue and a combined march

04

The water draws everyone in

The event has continued under direct government sanction, underscoring its status as a flagship state cultural showcase
