The story

Derevnya Dusha Rossii Revived Villages Ethno Festival in Muvyr

The village of Muvyr in Udmurtia vanished from official maps in 1981, then was revived starting in 2009 by a local entrepreneur determined to bring it back. Every summer since, the ethno-festival Derevnya Dusha Rossii has drawn thousands to Muvyr for craft and food workshops, tastings, agricultural exhibits, a farmers' market, and an ethnic fashion show celebrating rural Udmurt life.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What gives this festival its resonance is the story of the place itself: Muvyr disappeared as an administrative settlement in 1981, only to be physically rebuilt from 2009 onward by Alexander Korepanov, a local entrepreneur who treated reviving a single lost village as a personal project

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival that grew up around that revival draws on the same idea at regional scale, celebrating villages across Russia that have been abandoned or are fighting to survive rather than only showcasing thriving urban culture

03

The city starts moving

Performers such as the Ektoniсi and the Buranovo grandmothers' ensemble, both drawn from the same rural Udmurt world the festival celebrates, give the program a lived-in authenticity rather than an imported folk-show feel
