The story

Nizhny Novgorod Intervals Festival in Nizhny Novgorod

Intervals is an annual international multimedia art festival in Nizhny Novgorod, growing from a 2015 audiovisual party thrown by the Svetofon collective into a formal festival by 2017. It stages large-scale media installations and audiovisual performances on historic building facades and inside repurposed industrial spaces across the city center.

Intervals began not as a planned festival but as a single party: in 2015, the Nizhny Novgorod collective Svetofon threw an event where music was paired with an accompanying audiovisual show, and the collaboration between visual artists and musicians that emerged that night became the seed of something larger.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Intervals turns Nizhny Novgorod's historic architecture, including former factory buildings, the old city jail, grain elevators and the Kremlin, into canvases for projected and installed media art rather than confining installations to a conventional gallery, and its 2021 edition, staged as part of the city's 800th anniversary, spread across 15 locations, its largest footprint to date

02

The mystery stays covered

Attendance has scaled dramatically, from 2,500 visitors at its 2017 debut to 20,000 in 2019 and roughly 60,000 engaging with its 2020 teaser-format edition during pandemic restrictions
