The story

Novosibirsk Monstration in Novosibirsk

Monstration is an absurdist street march held every May 1st in Novosibirsk, begun in 2004 by artist Artyom Loskutov as a parody of Soviet-style May Day demonstrations. Participants carry placards with nonsensical or ironic slogans rather than political demands, turning the traditional workers' march into a piece of collective street performance art.

May 1st demonstrations were a fixture of Soviet civic life for decades: mandatory workplace columns marching behind banners praising labor and the state, a ritual that persisted in diminished form even after the Soviet Union's collapse.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Monstration's entire concept rests on absurdity as a form of expression: instead of political slogans, marchers carry signs reading intentionally meaningless or surreal phrases, borrowing the visual grammar of a Soviet workers' demonstration, banners, marching columns, May Day timing, while emptying it of literal political content

02

The mystery stays covered

That structure let the march navigate Russia's shifting tolerance for public assembly in ways an explicitly political protest could not, though organizers have at times still faced friction with local authorities over permits

03

The city starts moving

Started by a single Novosibirsk artist in 2004, it spread to other Siberian and Russian cities including Tomsk and Barnaul, making Novosibirsk's original march the reference point for a now-recognizable genre of ironic street performance across the country
