The story

IT Steppe Festival in Orenburg

Orenburg's own answer to esports culture arrived only recently: IT Steppe, a fast-growing festival of digital sports combining esports, laser tag, drone racing and hybrid physical-digital contests known as fidgital sport. Organized jointly by the region's Ministry of Physical Culture and Sports and Ministry of Digital Development, its debut drew more than five thousand visitors and some fifteen hundred competing athletes, and it has continued as an annual spring fixture.

Orenburg sits at the edge of the Russian steppe, a region better known for gas fields and wide-open grassland than for gaming culture.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

IT Steppe is unusual for treating esports, drone racing and traditional athletics as a single connected category rather than separate hobbies, reflecting a broader Russian push to formalize fidgital sport, a hybrid format pairing a physical task with a digital one in the same match

02

The mystery stays covered

Competitors move between laser-tag arenas, esports stations and drone-racing courses over the same weekend, alongside interactive stands where visitors can explore virtual city models or try beginner coding challenges

03

The city starts moving

For Orenburg, a city more associated with its steppe landscape and gas industry than digital culture, hosting thousands of visitors for an event built entirely around technology and competitive gaming marks a genuine shift in how the region markets itself
