The story

St Petersburg International Book Salon in Saint Petersburg

The Saint Petersburg International Book Salon is the largest book fair in northwestern Russia, held over four days each spring in the historic General Staff Building and adjoining venues. Established in 2008 by the Russian Book Union and the city government, it brings together publishers, booksellers, literary agents and authors for a program combining a commercial trade fair with public readings and panel discussions.

Each spring, the grand curved facade of the General Staff Building, which faces the Winter Palace across Palace Square and today houses part of the State Hermitage Museum's collection, takes on a second identity as the venue for northwestern Russia's largest book fair.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The salon's scale sets it apart regionally: it functions simultaneously as a business-to-business trade event, where publishers and booksellers negotiate distribution deals and literary agents make international contacts, and as a public festival open to browsing readers

02

The mystery stays covered

Its venue inside the General Staff Building, part of the Hermitage Museum complex facing Palace Square, gives the fair an architectural grandeur unusual for a trade show

03

The city starts moving

Since its 2008 founding, the event has grown into one of the principal annual gatherings for Russia's publishing industry outside Moscow, with a program spanning children's literature, academic publishing, regional-language titles and international rights trading
