The story

Summer Book Alleys in Saint Petersburg

Summer Book Alleys transforms Malaya Konyushennaya Street, a pedestrian lane in central Saint Petersburg, into an open-air book market each summer. Since 2015, open shelves stocked with more than ten thousand titles have lined the street daily from morning into evening, alongside a program of readings, author talks and workshops running several days a week through the season.

Malaya Konyushennaya Street runs a short, car-free stretch near Nevsky Prospect, one of the small pedestrian lanes that give central Saint Petersburg some of its most walkable corners.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Unlike a single-weekend book fair, Summer Book Alleys operates as a semi-permanent open-air installation running from June through September, open daily with browsing and purchase available at any hour within its long operating window

02

The mystery stays covered

The setting, a car-free pedestrian street near Nevsky Prospect, lets the book stalls function as a public gathering space rather than a fenced event site, drawing browsers who might not otherwise attend a dedicated literary festival

03

The city starts moving

The selection leans heavily on Saint Petersburg authors and locally produced books, giving the market a distinct regional identity alongside its general fiction and nonfiction stock, and its accompanying cultural program adds film screenings, theatre performances and workshops on top of straightforward bookselling
