Golden Phoenix Film Festival in Smolensk
Golden Phoenix is a Russian film festival built around an unusual niche: features and shorts directed by actors who have moved behind the camera. Held annually in Smolensk and the surrounding region, typically in autumn, it has run for close to two decades, organized by the Guild of Film Directors within the Russian Union of Cinematographers, judging recent work by performers making the transition into directing.
Every film industry has its actors-turned-directors, performers who spent years taking direction before deciding they had opinions worth imposing on someone else's performance.
