May Tree Festival Vyborg in Vyborg
May Tree turns Vyborg's medieval castle into a stage for a European-style spring festival each late May, centered on an open-air concert of folk and folk-rock bands. A decorated maypole, wrapped in colored ribbons, is raised on the castle's main square before an archery tournament, craft fair, cosplay zones and medieval-themed food stalls fill out a day built for lovers of Western European medieval culture.
Vyborg occupies an unusual place in Russian history: a town built by Swedish crusaders in the thirteenth century, passed between Swedish, Russian and Finnish control over subsequent centuries, and left with a genuine medieval castle unlike almost anything else standing on Russian territory today.
