Day of the People's Master Yakutia in Yakutsk
Every year on 5 March, Yakutsk marks the Day of the People's Master, a celebration of the folk artists and craftspeople who keep Sakha material culture alive. The day centers on a procession along Dzerzhinsky Street in national dress and an exhibition-fair where carvers, jewelers, seamstresses, and other artisans display and sell their work. It doubles as a showcase for the republic's handicraft production.
Yakutsk in early March is still locked in winter, the kind where breath freezes into small clouds, and yet on the fifth of the month the city's main street turns into something closer to a moving costume exhibit than a commute.
