The Sakhalin Chekhov Festival is an international theatre festival held in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, centered on the Sakhalin International Theatre Centre named after Anton Chekhov, who traveled to the island in 1890 to document its penal-colony system in his book Sakhalin Island. The festival brings Russian and international theatre companies to stage Chekhov's plays and other works.

In 1890, Anton Chekhov, already an established writer, made an arduous overland and river journey across Siberia to Sakhalin Island, then functioning as a Russian penal colony, to conduct what amounted to a sociological survey of the prisoners and settlers living there.
