The story

Nevis Culturama in Charlestown/Nevis

Nevis Culturama is the island's premier cultural festival, running roughly two weeks around the Emancipation Day holiday in late July and early August. Founded in 1974 to preserve Nevisian folk traditions, it combines calypso competitions, a cultural queen pageant, J'ouvert, a street parade and a food fair into a multi-week celebration centered on Charlestown.

Culturama has anchored Nevis's cultural calendar since 1974, when the Nevis Dramatic and Cultural Society created the festival to keep traditional dance troupes and folk arts from fading out of the island's Christmas season celebrations.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Culturama was founded specifically to rescue traditional dance troupes and folk arts that organizers felt were fading from the island's Christmas celebrations, giving the festival a heritage-preservation mission that distinguishes it from purely party-focused carnivals

02

The mystery stays covered

Timing it around Emancipation Day was a deliberate choice, linking Nevisian cultural pride directly to the memory of 1834 emancipation rather than to Christmas or New Year, as St Kitts's parallel Sugar Mas carnival does
