Saint Lucia Carnival in Castries

Saint Lucia Carnival began in 1947 as an impromptu Shrove Tuesday street parade in Castries and has grown into a major Caribbean festival, moved to mid-July since 1999 to avoid clashing with Trinidad's carnival. The season includes calypso and soca competitions, a King and Queen costume contest, and pre-dawn J'Ouvert celebrations centered on the capital.

Saint Lucia Carnival traces its origins to 1947, when a small group of locals paraded through Castries in ragged costumes on Shrove Tuesday, banging bottles and pieces of steel to improvise music, a spontaneous celebration that concluded at the home of the Walcott family on Chaussee Road.
