Vincy Mas in Kingstown/Nationwide
Vincy Mas is Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' national carnival, running roughly twelve days from late June into early July around Kingstown and other communities. Born from a blend of 18th-century European carnival customs and African traditions brought by enslaved and freed people, it shifted from the pre-Lenten calendar to a summer date in 1977 and now centers on calypso, steel pan, and costumed mas bands.
For twelve days each summer, Kingstown trades its usual rhythms for calypso basslines, steel pan practice sessions echoing from panyards, and the slow build toward a parade that will eventually spill an entire mas band into the capital's streets.
