The story

Bequia Easter Regatta in Port Elizabeth/Bequia

The Bequia Easter Regatta is a four-day sailing and shoreside festival based in Port Elizabeth, combining traditional local double-ender boat racing with international yacht racing. Organized by the volunteer-run Bequia Sailing Club for more than 35 years, it grew from a Whitsun Weekend event into one of the best-known small-island regattas in the southern Caribbean.

For more than 35 years, Easter weekend on Bequia has meant one thing above all else: sails filling Admiralty Bay as the island's own double-ender sailboats race alongside visiting yachts from across the Caribbean and beyond, all organized by a small band of volunteers with no larger commercial backer than the Bequia Sailing Club itself.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The regatta stands out for pairing serious international yacht competition with a distinctly local sailing tradition: double-ender boats, built in the same style Bequian shipwrights have used for generations, race alongside larger visiting yachts drawn from across the Caribbean and beyond

02

The mystery stays covered

Bequia's identity as a boatbuilding and seafaring island runs directly through the event, organized entirely by the Bequia Sailing Club's volunteers rather than a commercial operator

03

The city starts moving

Over more than three decades it moved from a smaller Whitsun Weekend gathering to an Easter-weekend fixture recognized regionally as one of the strongest small-island regattas in the southern Caribbean
