The story

Teuila Festival in Apia

Established in 1991, the Teuila Festival is Samoa's premier annual cultural celebration, held in Apia each September and named for the country's national flower. The week-long programme centers on the Miss Samoa pageant, traditional siva dance and fire-knife competitions, choir performances, canoe races, and an agricultural and food show.

The teuila, a red ginger flower that grows widely across Samoa, gives its name to the country's largest annual cultural festival, first held in 1991 as a way of consolidating the country's scattered cultural showcases into a single event capable of drawing both diaspora Samoans and international visitors to Apia.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Teuila Festival has grown, over more than three decades, into one of the South Pacific's biggest cultural celebrations, and its scale is what sets it apart from smaller village-level festivals elsewhere in Samoa: it draws performers from across the country's districts into a single Apia-based programme, coordinated by the Samoa Tourism Authority

02

The mystery stays covered

The Miss Samoa pageant, held as part of the festival, selects a cultural ambassador who represents Samoa at events through the following year, giving the festival a role beyond entertainment

03

The city starts moving

Fire-knife dancing, a competitive art form associated with Samoan and wider Polynesian performance culture, draws some of the region's leading performers, while a Teuila National Village Cricket Championship runs alongside using Samoa's own version of the sport, kilikiti
