The story

Investiture of the Captains Regent - Spring in Citta di San Marino

The spring Investiture of the Captains Regent takes place every first of April in Citta di San Marino, when the republic's two joint heads of state are sworn in for their six-month term through a full day of flag ceremonies, a High Mass and a formal procession, all free and open to visitors.

Twice a year, on the first of April and the first of October, San Marino performs one of Europe's oldest continuously enacted transfers of political power, and it does so entirely in public.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

San Marino is governed by two Captains Regent who serve jointly as co-heads of state for exactly six months at a time, a system of dual leadership modeled directly on the consuls of the ancient Roman Republic and documented back to at least 1243, making the investiture one of Europe's longest continuously performed constitutional ceremonies

02

The mystery stays covered

Because the whole event is staged in the open, in the small streets and squares of the historic center rather than behind closed doors, visitors can watch a modern democracy's peaceful transfer of power unfold as street theater: a flag-raising with artillery salute, an armed forces parade, a religious service, and the physical handover of ceremonial office when the outgoing Captains Regent place the collar of the Order of San Marino on their successors
