Liberty Day and Fall of Fascism Anniversary in Citta di San Marino
Observed every twenty-eighth of July, the Anniversary of the Fall of Fascism is a national holiday in San Marino commemorating the 1943 collapse of the Sammarinese Fascist Party's one-party rule, one of the few national holidays anywhere marking the end of a country's own home-grown fascist government.
It is easy to assume that a country as small as San Marino, with a population that today numbers only in the tens of thousands, would have been little more than a bystander to the political convulsions that swept Europe in the twentieth century.
