The story

Medieval Days Festival Historica in Citta di San Marino

San Marino's long-running summer medieval reenactment tradition, historically known as Giornate Medioevali and staged for 28 editions through 2025, appears to have been rebranded for 2026 as San Marino Antiqua, while a separate, broader-scope production called Historica San Marino covers multiple historical eras and shows no confirmed recent editions since 2021.

San Marino's historic center needs little help looking medieval, with its stone towers and narrow streets already carrying centuries of history, but each summer the republic goes further, filling those streets with costumed parades, crossbowmen, and flag-throwers to actively perform that history rather than simply preserve it.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

For nearly three decades, Giornate Medioevali filled San Marino's historic center with costumed parades, crossbowmen, flag-throwing sbandieratori, musicians, medieval markets, and evening shows at the Cava dei Balestrieri, under artistic director Giuseppe Del Barna of the Sbandieratori di Sansepolcro

02

The mystery stays covered

In 2026 that lineage continued under a new name, San Marino Antiqua, Leggende e storie del Titano, run with San Marino's Tourism Secretariat and local reenactment groups, and featuring the 70th-anniversary Palio of the Federazione Balestrieri Sammarinesi, San Marino's historic crossbowmen's federation, while a separate multi-era production, Historica San Marino, has staged large-scale reenactments spanning the Roman era through the World Wars with hundreds of performers, though only a 2021 edition could be confirmed as having actually taken place
