The story

Torneo della Liberta in Citta di San Marino

Torneo della Liberta is San Marino's Campionato Assoluto di Arco Storico, an open championship for historical-bow archery held each July in Citta di San Marino. Named for the Piazza della Liberta at the heart of the walled hilltop capital, it draws archers shooting traditional and period-style bows rather than modern Olympic recurve or compound equipment.

High on Monte Titano, where the Republic of San Marino has watched over the surrounding Romagna plain for close to seventeen centuries, one square carries more symbolic weight than any other.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The arco storico label sets the field apart from mainstream competitive archery: entrants shoot longbows, traditional recurves and other historical-pattern bows without the sights, stabilizers and mechanical releases used in Olympic-style shooting, so technique and instinctive aim matter more than equipment

02

The mystery stays covered

Holding the absolute (open) title event inside San Marino links the sport to the republic's wider medieval identity, already visible in its uniformed crossbowmen corps and historical pageantry, even though this tournament tests bows rather than crossbows

03

The city starts moving

Shooting on Monte Titano, within sight of the fortress towers and the square that gives the tournament its name, gives the championship a backdrop that few regional archery meets can match, and turns a niche sporting fixture into a reason to walk the old town in midsummer
