Islamic Arts Biennale in Jeddah

The Islamic Arts Biennale is a recurring exhibition exploring the history and living practice of Islamic art, staged inside the Western Hajj Terminal at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah. Organized by the Diriyah Biennale Foundation, its inaugural 2023 edition, titled Awwal Bait, or First House, was artistically directed by Sumayya Vally, pairing centuries-old manuscripts and textiles with newly commissioned contemporary works.

When the Diriyah Biennale Foundation went looking for a venue for Saudi Arabia's first Islamic Arts Biennale, it chose not a museum but an airport terminal built for pilgrims.
