The story

Jeddah Art Week in Jeddah

Jeddah Art Week is the informal media label attached to the citywide contemporary-art gathering centered on Jeddah's Al-Balad district and Athr Gallery, traced by press coverage to Sotheby's first Saudi exhibition in February 2013. From 2014 onward the same February to March gathering has run under the branded name 21,39 Jeddah Arts, organized by the Saudi Art Council.

In February 2013, Sotheby's staged its first exhibition in Saudi Arabia inside a gallery in Jeddah's old town, and press at the time described the surrounding activity as a Jeddah art week.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The available record shows no separately branded, currently operating program called Jeddah Art Week distinct from 21,39 Jeddah Arts

02

The mystery stays covered

Coverage of the 2013 Sotheby's exhibition used the phrase to describe Jeddah's emerging gallery scene, and that same scene, anchored by Athr Gallery founders Hamza Serafi and Mohammed Hafiz, became the Saudi Art Council's annual 21,39 Jeddah Arts exhibition the following year

03

The city starts moving

What made the moment notable was Jeddah's coral-stone Al-Balad quarter becoming a venue for international-caliber contemporary art for the first time
