Dak'Art Biennale in Dakar

Dak'Art, the Dakar Biennale, is Africa's longest continuously running large-scale contemporary art event, held every two years in Dakar, Senegal, since transitioning to a dedicated focus on contemporary African art in 1996, organized under the Senegalese government and surrounded by a sprawling independent fringe program.

In 1989, the Senegalese government began planning a new kind of cultural event, one that would alternate between literature and visual art every two years.

Dak'Art holds a genuinely rare distinction on its own continent: it is the longest-running grand-scale contemporary art event in Africa, tracing back to a 1990 edition focused on literature and a 1992 edition devoted to visual art, before consolidating from 1996 onward into a biennale centered on contemporary African art

Eligibility rules have themselves made history, since from 2000 the main Exposition Internationale required artists to hold African citizenship, a policy that only opened to non-African participants in 2014, through a Cultural Diversity exhibition at the IFAN Theodore Monod Museum
