The story

Festival Kaay Fecc in Dakar

Festival Kaay Fecc is Dakar's flagship international dance festival, founded in 2001 with choreographer Germaine Acogny as godmother of its first edition. Held each year at the Centre Culturel Blaise Senghor, it showcases traditional and contemporary African and international choreography, and in 2025 added a national hip-hop Battle competition.

When Kaay Fecc launched in 2001 in Dakar, it did so with an unusually strong endorsement for a new festival: Germaine Acogny, the Senegalese-French choreographer whose decades of work helped define contemporary African dance as a recognized global art form, served as godmother of that first edition, lending the young festival immediate credibility within international dance circles.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Kaay Fecc, whose name translates roughly as come and dance, has run continuously since 2001, making it one of the longer-established dance festivals on the continent, and its founding association with Germaine Acogny, widely regarded as a founding figure of contemporary African dance, gave it credibility within the international choreography world from its very first edition

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival deliberately spans both traditional and contemporary African dance forms rather than favoring one, and its 2025 edition expanded the format further by launching the Battle National de Danse Hip-Hop, a nationwide, video-preselected hip-hop dance competition covering styles like breaking and popping, folding Dakar's urban dance culture into an event previously associated mainly with traditional and contemporary choreography
