The story

Films Femmes Afrique in Dakar and regions

Films Femmes Afrique is an annual Dakar-based film festival dedicated to African women in cinema, screening dozens of features, documentaries, and shorts by and about African women. Beyond its Dakar home base, the festival tours to a dozen towns across Senegal, extending screenings and debate well past the capital each edition.

Films Femmes Afrique began as an answer to a persistent imbalance in African cinema: women directors, producers, and technicians have long made significant work while receiving a fraction of the screen time, funding, and critical attention given to their male counterparts.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's defining feature is scale paired with reach: its 2026 seventh edition screened 82 films and toured 12 towns across Senegal rather than staying confined to Dakar theaters

02

The mystery stays covered

Each edition carries a distinct thematic focus

03

The city starts moving

2026 spotlighted the essential but often invisible crew and technical roles behind African filmmaking

04

The water draws everyone in

The festival also hands out competitive prizes, with its 2026 best feature award going to La Legende de la Reine Vagabonde de Lagos, giving the event real weight within African cinema circles rather than functioning as pure exhibition
