Festival Banlieue Wake Up in Diamaguene Sicap Mbao
Festival Banlieue Wake Up is an annual culture and music festival held in Diamaguene Sicap Mbao, a working-class suburb of Dakar. Now past its eleventh edition, the ten-day event pairs concerts with youth training workshops and a festival village showcasing local artisans and women-led enterprises, aiming to spotlight Dakar's outlying neighborhoods.
Diamaguene Sicap Mbao is one of the many densely populated suburbs that ring Dakar, part of a wider banlieue landscape that includes Pikine, Guediawaye and Thiaroye, neighborhoods that house much of the capital's population but receive a fraction of the cultural investment concentrated in central Dakar and its plateau district.
