The story

Gamou de Tivaouane in Tivaouane

The Gamou de Tivaouane is one of Senegal's largest Islamic pilgrimages, a Mawlid celebration marking the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, held annually in the Tijaniyya Sufi holy city of Tivaouane. Drawing several million pilgrims, including an estimated five million in 2025, it is led by the khalife general of the city's Tijaniyya religious establishment.

Tivaouane, a town in Senegal's Thies region, owes its religious prominence almost entirely to El Hadji Malick Sy, the Tijaniyya Sufi scholar who settled there in the late nineteenth century and built it into the movement's foremost center of Islamic learning and spiritual authority in West Africa.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Tivaouane's Gamou distinguishes itself as the flagship Mawlid celebration of Senegal's Tijaniyya Sufi order, the country's other major Sufi tradition alongside the Mouride brotherhood, tracing its authority to El Hadji Malick Sy, the scholar who established Tivaouane as a center of Tijaniyya learning in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries

02

The mystery stays covered

Unlike the Mouride Grand Magal, which commemorates a specific exile, the Gamou centers on the Mawlid, the Islamic marking of the Prophet's birth, giving it a devotional focus shared with Mawlid celebrations elsewhere, even as its scale and organization in Tivaouane are distinctly Senegalese

03

The city starts moving

City roads, drainage and sanitation are visibly upgraded each year in preparation, reflecting how central the Gamou has become to the town's civic calendar
